How to Create Custom DIY Magnets with Stone City Printable Magnetic Sheets?

Looking to make custom fridge magnets, office whiteboard signs, or personalized crafts? Printable magnetic sheets are one of the most rewarding and versatile craft materials on the market.

At Stone City, we are proud to offer high-quality Inkjet Printable Magnetic Sheets. In this guide, we’ll dive into what makes our 12mil magnetic sheets stand out, give you a detailed walkthrough on how to print and cut your own magnets using a Cricut machine, and share key tips for flawless results.

What Makes Stone City Printable Magnetic Sheets Different?

Not all magnetic sheets are created equal. If you’ve used standard printable magnet paper before, you may have experienced flimsy hold or prints that slide right off vertical metal surfaces. Here is why Stone City magnetic sheets excel:

1. Premium 12mil Thickness for Superior Hold

Most standard printable magnetic papers on the market hover around 8mil–10mil in thickness. Stone City magnetic sheets are engineered at 12mil thick.

  • Stronger Hold: Because the flexible magnetic base is thicker, it inherently carries stronger magnetic attraction.

  • Durable & Pliable: The extra thickness gives your finished magnets a premium, substantial feel in your hand without sacrificing flexibility during cutting.

2. High-Gloss Inkjet Coating

Our glossy finish absorbs inkjet ink quickly and vividly, bringing out bold colors, sharp detail, and clean text for all your graphics.

📢 Coming Soon: We are constantly innovating! While our 12mil sheets provide exceptional magnetic hold for craft projects, home decor, and office signs, we will soon be launching an ultra-strong magnetic product line designed for heavy-duty applications. Stay tuned!

Step-by-Step Tutorial: Making Magnets with Cricut & Inkjet Printer

Follow this step-by-step process using Stone City Glossy Printable Magnetic Sheets, an inkjet printer, and a cutting machine like the Cricut Maker.

  1. Design & Setup (Cricut Design Space)

    • Upload design and add a 0.25" white offset background.

    • Use Contour -> Hide All Contours on the background layer to delete inner cutouts.

    • Select both layers and click Flatten for Print Then Cut.

  2. Print

    • Send to Inkjet printer with Add Bleed and Use System Dialog ON.

    • Printer Settings: Choose Photo Paper (Glossy) with Standard or High Quality.

  3. Laminate (Optional)

    • Apply a self-adhesive laminating sheet over the print with a squeegee to prevent ink smudging. Trim overhanging laminate edges.

  4. Cut & Finish

    • Roll sheet firmly onto a sticky Cricut mat.

    • Select Printable Magnetic Sheet setting with More pressure.

    • Crucial: After the first pass, do NOT unload. Press the Cricut button again for a 2nd pass to cut through the 12mil thickness smoothly.

    • Unload, peel mat away from the magnets, and pop them out!

Pro Tips & Precautions

  • Blade Sharpness: 12mil is thick—use a sharp Fine-Point blade or test deeper cut settings (e.g., Light Chipboard).

  • Double Pass is Must: Always run 2 passes before unloading to prevent tearing intricate designs.

  • Scissors Work Too: Easily hand-cut simple shapes using regular craft scissors.

  • Bend Mat, Not Magnet: Flip the mat face-down and peel it back away from the sheet to avoid creasing your magnets.
